BMW was well-known for its contributions to automotive culture, and it was always ahead of the competition in terms of performance and innovation. However, in light of recent events, BMW has become a mass-market churner and has lost its way, as evidenced by the BMW 4-series.
The 4-series was a market-driven idea from BMW at a time when the community didn't really need one because the 3-series coupe did its job admirably. Although the 4-series was not revolutionary, the G22 generation received far more attention than the F32 it replaced. Who can forget the spy shots that shook the community when they revealed the upcoming 4-series/ 3-series with a massive grille? To be fair, the grille isn't all that bad and will grow on people eventually.
Because the automotive world has so much to offer these days, BMW decided to give the 4-series an extra set of doors. Here's what we can expect from the upcoming BMW 4-series Gran Coupe in 2022.
The 2022 BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe's engine
There isn't much information available about the engine specs, but based on how previous BMWs have been revealed, we expect the upcoming Grand Coupe to feature the current lineup of engines. According to reports, the 4-series fastback will initially be available in two variants: 430i and M440i. There is the possibility of an M4 Gran Coupe in the future, but based on previous experiences, BMW has refrained from offering an M-powered 4-series fastback. However, as market demands shift, so do previous trends.
The 430i Gran Coupe, like the current 4-series, will be powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four producing 255 horsepower and 294 lb-ft of torque. The more powerful M440i, on the other hand, should be powered by BMW's 3.0-liter turbocharged straight-six producing 382 horsepower and 364 lb-ft of torque.
If BMW's M-division takes a serious look at the Gran Coupe, the S58 could end up under the hood. The 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six, internally referred to as the S58, is available in two configurations in the M4: 473 horsepower in the M and 503 horsepower in the M competition. With BMW's intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive system completing the drivetrain layout, torque should be a healthy 443 lb-ft.
A 4-series with four doors
If you've seen the 4-series, there's a good chance you won't confuse it with the Gran Coupe. It's essentially a 4-series with additional rear doors. What's the point of the extra doors? So, what's the point of the M3? The M3 is a traditional three-box design, whereas the 4-series Gran Coupe is a fastback with a hatch rather than a trunk.
We won't expect much to change because information is scarce and spy shots aren't revealing anything significant. However, because BMW has camo-covered the entire car, a slightly revised front and rear fascia is possible. Typically, carmakers exclude parts that they intend to keep as part of the existing design, but this is not the case here. Furthermore, because the Gran Coupe is a completely new body style, BMW could refresh its exterior design. However, this is based solely on educated guesses and should be taken with a grain of salt.
The Price of The 2022 BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe
It's far too soon to speculate on when the 4-series Gran Coupe will be revealed. Due to the market's failure to respond to the 4-series as expected, as well as the pandemic, the reveals may be pushed back to late 2021 or possibly 2022. Given the uncertainty, it's safe to say that whenever the covers are pulled, the 4-series will be a knockout, no matter how hideous it appears. Looks are subjective, and the situation isn't as bad as you might think. The Gran Coupe is approximately $2,000 more expensive than the coupe. Style of The 2022 BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe
Practicality suffers as a result of the 4-series being a strictly 2-door coupe. However, the 3-series should easily fill the void, but BMW went ahead and introduced a 4-series fastback anyway. Having said that, one of the most intriguing aspects currently being used in the industry is product line expansion. It should be noted that the 3-series lacks a fastback design, and BMW must fill that void.
BMW can correct this with the 4-series and expand the scope of a more stylish 4-door coupe. However, we do not anticipate a completely redesigned interior. If anything, it should be an exact replica of the current 4-series cockpit, with the addition of slightly more spacious rear seats, similar to the 2-series and its Gran Coupe counterpart. Three-zone climate control, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a 360-degree surround-view camera, and an automated parking system are among the convenience features expected.
